Rosa Mondial is a relatively winter-hardy plant that can be grown in conditions of the middle zone and the south (and when sheltered for the winter - in Siberia and the Urals). The variety is unpretentious, but picky about the composition of the soil. Even a novice amateur can grow these beautiful bushes with large white flowers.
Breeding history
Rose Mondial is a variety bred in Germany in 1993 by W. Kordes' Söhne Rosenschulen. This is one of the oldest nurseries, founded in 1887. The organization was founded by Wilhelm Kordes.
Quite quickly, the variety spread to different countries. It began to be used not only in flower beds, but also in bouquets. As a result, Mondial rose was awarded the highest rating, being included in the Super Premium class (Super Premium). Belonging to this category means high decorative qualities.
The flower symbolizes harmony, reconciliation, mutual understanding between people. It can be given both as a sign of establishing old and new relationships.
Description of the Mondial rose variety and characteristics
Rosa Mondial is a perennial flowering shrub. The variety belongs to the group of medium-sized hybrid tea roses (height from 40 to 90, less often 100-110 cm).
Main characteristics:
- average height 60–80 cm;
- the bush is not sprawling, rather compact;
- unfolded flower size 7–11 cm;
- number of petals: 25-30 (semi-double);
- color is white, cream, greenish;
- flowering profuse, repeated (two waves), from early June to early September;
- winter hardiness: zone 5 (withstands frosts down to –29 ° C);
- the best regions for growing: south, middle lane, Volga region, Chernozem region;
- resistance to powdery mildew and black spot, medium to rain;
- use: landscaping, classic bouquets, floral wedding arrangements.
Stems are perfectly straight, strong, with a small number of thorns (from 4 to 8 per shoot). The leaves are large, petiolate, dark green, rich in color. The surface is glossy, embossed - veins stand out.
The buds are large, reaching 6–7 cm in diameter, and when fully opened, up to 10 cm. They consist of 30 petals with graceful wavy edges of white, creamy color (transition from lighter shades to greenish in the center). There are also other tones, for example, pink, coral rose Mondial and others. The embossed surface of the petals adds volume. Thanks to this, they can be used separately - in the form of a scattering. The aroma is delicate, mild.
Roses with a height of 50–80 cm look beautiful in classic bouquets, and with a shorter shoot of 4–50 cm - in flower arrangements for a wedding celebration.
Varieties of varieties
There are several varieties of Mondial with pink, white and even gray petals. They can also be used in compositions or to decorate a flower garden.
Rose Pink Mondial
Pink Mondiale hybrid tea rose bred in Ecuador. Its large and dense buds are painted in pastel pink, and the edges of the petals are light green, which gives them a very beautiful appearance.The bush is of average height 70–80 cm, rather compact (up to 50 cm wide). It prefers to grow on light, fertile soil with good lighting. Flowering, like the snow-white species Mondial, is long and repeated (at the beginning and at the end of summer).
Rose variety Fantasy Mondial
Fantasia Mondiale is a variety of Mondial rose, which was bred in Germany in 2007. Its double flowers are composed of 50 rather large petals with a center of salmon and coral shades, then closer to the classic pink, and the edges are almost white.
Differs in good immunity to various diseases, especially to black spot and powdery mildew. Average winter hardiness (up to -23 ° C), low rain resistance.
White roses Mondial
The main variety, White Rose Mondial, is characterized by its classic cream-white and light green (closer to the edges) coloration. This rose is bred in Ecuador. The bush is medium-sized, blooms in two waves, after cutting it is not stored for long. Directions of use - in garden design, for floristic compositions.
Gray Mondial
Mondial Gray is a rare variety of Mondial roses, painted in an unusual gray color. The flower was bred in Holland. The stems are not very tall - 50-60 cm. It is rarely available from suppliers, it is sold by prior order.
Advantages and disadvantages of the variety
Florists and florists appreciate the rose for its decorative effect and other benefits:
- flowers are large, pleasant in color, lush;
- have a delicate, albeit weak aroma;
- used to decorate a flower garden, make bouquets and floral arrangements;
- long flowering - from early summer to early September;
- stems are straight, long and strong - the bush does not need a garter;
- to get a bright, original composition, white petals can be painted in any color.
Along with the advantages, this variety has its own disadvantages:
- winter hardiness is usually low. Almost all regions of Russia will need additional shelter for the winter;
- the plant is demanding on the composition of the soil: the soil should be light and fertile, without strong moisture;
- to form a bush, you will need to carry out regular pruning;
- immunity in most varieties is average;
- flowers lose their decorative properties due to frequent and heavy rains.
Reproduction methods
Since Mondial rose is a hybrid variety, it can only be grown vegetatively - by cuttings. It is necessary to start harvesting at the beginning or middle of summer - when the shoots are just beginning to form buds, or after the first inflorescences begin to fade.
Cuttings are cut only from semi-lignified shoots. For this, it is better to use relatively mature bushes (from the age of 3 years). The instruction is simple:
- Cuttings are obtained with a length of 7–8 cm so that the upper part is 0.5 cm higher than the bud.
- Two cuts are made - the upper straight and the lower oblique (45 °).
- Remove all leaves.
- The lower cut is immersed in a growth stimulant solution - for example, in "Heteroauxin" or aloe juice mixed with water (1: 1).
- After a few hours, rinse with water, planted immediately in open ground or in a box with a mixture of sand and peat (1: 1). In the case of planting in a garden bed, the same substrate must be poured over the soil.
- Cover the box with foil, and the seedlings in the open garden with plastic or glass jars.
- Moisturize abundantly daily.
- Give urea or ammonium nitrate after 15 days (1 incomplete tablespoon in a standard 10 liter bucket of water).
- A month later, cuttings of Mondial rose will give roots: at this moment, the banks can be removed.The seedlings are transferred from the box to a permanent place. If they were originally planted in the ground, this does not need to be done.
Growing and care
Judging by the reviews and description, it is not very difficult to care for the Mondial rose (pictured). But special attention must be paid to the composition of the soil. The flower prefers light, fertile soil. The best option is loose loam with a neutral reaction of the medium (pH = 7).
If you are not sure, it is better to additionally conduct a test using a litmus test sold in a country store (alkaline earth is acidified with vinegar or citric acid, and acidic earth is made alkaline with slaked lime or dolomite flour).
The landing site itself should be:
- well lit (completely open);
- not waterlogged (better on a hill, not in lowlands);
- protected from strong winds (buildings, trees, shrubs).
Planting is carried out in mid-April (south) or closer to the beginning of May (middle lane). In regions with an unfavorable climate (Ural, Siberia) - in mid-May. The sequence of actions is as follows:
- They clean and dig up the site.
- Garden compost or matured humus is added to the soil in the amount of 2-3 kg per 1 m2... You can also add a tablespoon of superphosphate and wood ash to each well. Thanks to this, Mondial rose buds will give lush flowers.
- Several pits are formed so deep that the roots of the rose are located in them freely, and there is still 10-15 cm of space.
- The seedling is rooted, covered with earth, lightly tamped. In this case, the root collar should remain close to the surface - the level of deepening is about 1 cm.
- It is abundantly watered with a bucket of settled water, mulched with humus, peat, straw or other materials.
After planting, you need to take care of the Mondial rose like this:
- Watering every week, in case of drought - 2 times more often, with heavy rains - without additional moisture.
- Loosening the soil - regularly (one day after each watering).
- Fertilizers for Mondial roses are applied 3 times per season: in April, nitrogen compositions. During bud formation, and then for re-flowering (August) - superphosphate and potassium salt. The break between dressings is at least two weeks.
- Shelter for the winter - after the temperature has dropped to 0 ° C. The above-ground part is completely cut off, leaving shoots at least 15–20 cm high. The Mondial rose bush is sprinkled, mulched with peat or sprinkled with foliage, earth, and laid on top with spruce branches. The total height of the protective layer is at least 20 cm.
- Pruning at least 2 times a year: in spring - all branches, leaving shoots no more than 15 cm (2-3 buds high). In the fall, remove all faded peduncles and shoots that have not produced inflorescences.
Pests and diseases
The immunity of Mondial rose depends on the specific variety - some have good, others average. Therefore, it is recommended to carry out mandatory preventive treatment of bushes in May with any fungicide:
- Fitosporin;
- "Speed";
- "Tattu";
- "Topaz";
- "Profit";
- "Maksim".
In summer, plants can attack aphids and other pests. They can be dealt with with insecticides:
- Fitoverm;
- "Decis";
- Biotlin;
- Aktara;
- "Match";
- Vertimek.
Application in landscape design
Rosa Mondial is a lush bush with beautiful white flowers. It is a self-sufficient plant that is often used in single plantings. It is also planted in rose gardens, combining with representatives of other varieties:
- The central accent of the site.
- Flower arrangement with Mondial rose.
