General description of perennial lavater

Lavatera (wild rose, hatyma) is a perennial plant with beautiful flowers. The name was given in honor of the Swiss naturalists, the Lavater brothers, who conducted scientific activities in Zurich.

The plant is a perennial bush with powerful branches up to 1.5-2 m in height. The flowers of the perennial lavatera are regular, symmetrical, 8-10 cm in diameter. The corolla is five-leafed, i.e. consists of 5 identical petals. The hautma flower can be painted in beautiful, attractive colors:

  • light pink;
  • white;
  • deep pink;
  • delicate lilac.

Often, the flowers of perennial lavatera have a pattern on the petals in the form of darker stripes.

The leaves are green, with a gray tint, can be round or heart-shaped. They have a small fluff. The root of the perennial lavater is very powerful - it goes into the ground up to 1.5 meters. Therefore, the perennial lavatera confidently survives the drought.

Barnsley Baby has gorgeous light-colored flowers with an interesting pink eye in the center, against which green leaves look good.

Application in landscape design

Since perennial lavatera is a very tall plant (1.5 meters on average), it looks good in single plantings. The bushes are planted in open places, near the entrance to the house, near the garden bench, not far from the gazebo and other recreation areas.

Also, the bush is used in other options. It is appropriate to plant it:

  • along a fence or road;
  • in flower beds and in complex flower arrangements.

Almost all flowers are combined with perennial lavater. The main thing is that they are not too low, otherwise the plants will be lost against the background of a tall bush. You also need to choose the right color combination: for example, white with pink, lilac with red.

Often, a perennial lavater is planted in street pots and placed along the road.

Breeding features

Perennial lavatera reproduces in shifts, which freely spread over the adjacent territory. As a rule, they root well without outside help, which is why a new flower bed may appear next season.

Therefore, in the fall, you need to especially carefully observe the plant. The seeds ripen in capsules that are green at first, then turn brown and fall to the ground. To be sure of their maturity, you need to open one box. If the seeds spill out freely, then they are ripe. They can be collected and stored at home.

Attention! The seeds are stored in a newspaper or bag made of natural breathable materials at room temperature, the room should be moderately humid

Planting and caring for perennial lavater in the open field

There are two ways to grow perennial lavater: sowing seeds in pots or directly into open ground.

In the first case, the bushes will have time to grow up, give powerful branches, in the second they will also take root, but they will not gain much green mass. If it is not possible to grow seedlings, then sowing in open ground is a very convenient option.

Recommended timing

The seeds of the perennial lavater are planted in such a way as to transfer the seedlings to open ground in mid-May. Since they usually grow within 60-70 days, it is advisable to sow them in early March. In the south, the timing is slightly different: at the end of February they are engaged in planting seeds, and the seedlings are transferred to the flower garden at the end of April.

When planting seed directly into the ground, you must wait until the threat of frost has passed. This usually happens in the middle or even at the end of May. In the south, you can plant earlier - in late April or early May.

Growing from seeds by seedling method

The seeds are planted in peat tablets, boxes or plastic cups. The soil can be purchased at the store or you can pick it up yourself, for example, mix garden soil with the same amount of peat and disinfect the mixture in a weak solution of potassium permanganate (leave overnight).

The first shoots of perennial lavater appear in 7-10 days.

Planting algorithm:

  1. Seeds of perennial lavater are pickled in potassium permanganate.
  2. Expanded clay or other drainage is placed on the bottom of the container.

    The first shoots of perennial lavater appear in 7-10 days.

  3. Fill up the soil.
  4. Moisten with a spray bottle.
  5. Seeds are planted to a depth of 1 cm (2-3 pieces in each pot).
  6. Cover with glass and grow in a greenhouse at room temperature.

Ventilate regularly. They are illuminated with a phytolamp so that the total length of the day is at least 12 hours.

After the appearance of the second pair of leaves, the plant dives. In this case, the root must be shortened by a third of the length so that the lavater gains green mass.

Important! 2 weeks before transferring to open ground, the seedlings should be hardened, gradually reducing the daytime temperature to 16-18 ° C.

Sowing directly into the ground

When planting seeds of a perennial lavater in the ground, the site must be dug up. If the soil is depleted, add rotted manure or complex mineral fertilizer. Then plant the seeds according to the standard scheme: 20 cm between seedlings and 25 cm between rows. At first, it is recommended to cover it with a film. You will also need to moisten the soil in time and periodically ventilate the greenhouse.

Care features

The long-term lavater does not require special care, it is enough to follow the following rules:

  • water as needed: in hot weather, once a week, in the presence of rains, additional moisture is not needed;
  • apply fertilizing twice - nitrogen or complex fertilizer before planting seedlings, as well as a mixture of equal amounts of potassium sulfate and sodium sulfate in mid-July, when abundant flowering begins;
  • periodically loosen the soil;
  • after planting, it is better to immediately mulch the roots so that the soil remains moist for as long as possible.
Important! If the variety is tall (1.5 m or more), you need to think about support in advance.

Lavatera perennial produces numerous lush flowers even with minimal maintenance.

Wintering

Perennial lavater hibernates in the open field. It tolerates frost well enough, but some varieties are not so winter hardy. For example, Burgundy Vine copes with frosts down to -23 ° C, so it will not work to grow it in Siberia and the Urals.

Even in the central part of Russia and in the South, the plant must be prepared for winter:

  1. At the end of summer and in September, it is not necessary to feed the perennial lavender. Instead, give abundant watering.
  2. Remove all wilted petals.
  3. The branches are cut or carefully bent to the ground, fixed with a rope.
  4. A plank structure is installed on top.
  5. Sprinkle with dry leaves, spruce branches, straw.
  6. Cover with agrofibre or burlap.

In the spring, at the end of March, the cover must be removed, since the foliage can overheat

This is especially true for the southern regions, where noticeable thaws begin already at this time.

Diseases and pests

Many gardeners note that perennial lavatera is resistant to pests and diseases. However, it is susceptible to fungal disease - rust. It is possible to determine the pathology by an external sign - brown, brown spots form on the leaves.

For treatment, any fungicide is used (Topaz, Fitosporin, Tattu, Bordeaux liquid and others). You can also use folk remedies:

  • 400 g of fresh celandine herbs (or 100 g of dry raw materials) are poured into 1 liter of water, brought to a boil and cooked over low heat for 0.5 hours, then allowed to cool and sprayed with foliage;
  • 2 tablespoons of tobacco leaves (dried) are also poured into 1 liter of water, infused for 2 days, filtered and brought to a total volume of 2 liters, then the crown is also sprayed.
Attention! For prevention, it is better to spray the perennial lavater bush back in May, immediately after planting. For the next season, processing can be carried out after the final snow melt - in April.

Conclusion

Perennial Lavatera is one of the largest garden shrubs that adorn the garden with lush flowering. In care, the culture is not capricious, however, in terms of winter hardiness, varieties can be very different. Therefore, before purchasing seeds, it is important to clarify the possibility of growing a bush in a specific region.
