Leghorn chickens trace their ancestry from places located on the Mediterranean coast in Italy. The port of Livorno gave its name to the breed. In the 19th century, the Leghorns came to America. Crossbreeding with black minor, with fighting chickens, Japanese decorative chickens gave the result in the form of consolidation of such qualities of the breed as egg production and rapid maturation of young animals. Different breeding programs, which were carried out in different environmental conditions, eventually led to the emergence of a new breed with characteristic characteristics. Leghorns became the base breed from which other breeds and hybrids were formed.
In the Soviet Union, the breed appeared in the 30s. In the beginning, it was used without modification. Then domestic breeders on the basis of Leghorns began to develop new breeds. Examples of domestic breeds, in the creation of which the genetic material of the Leghorn breed, the Russian white breed, was used, Kuchino jubilee.
Appearance
Description of the breed of Leghorn chickens: the head is small in size, the crest is leaf-shaped, in roosters it is erect, in chickens it falls to one side. In young chickens, the eyes are dark orange in color; with age, the color of the eyes changes to light yellow. The ear openings are white or blue, the earrings are red. The neck is elongated, not thick. Together with the body, it forms an elongated triangle. Wide chest and voluminous belly. The legs are thin but strong. In juveniles they are yellow, and in adults they are white. The plumage is tightly pressed to the body. The tail is wide and has a slope of 45 degrees. See in the photo how Leghorn chickens look.
Plumage colors are white, black, variegated, brown, golden, silver and others. More than 20 varieties in total. Chickens of the White Leghorn breed are the most common in the world.
Productivity
- Chickens of the Leghorn breed are exclusively egg-oriented;
- The mass of Leghorn laying hens often reaches 2 kg, and of roosters 2.6 kg;
- When they reach the age of 4.5 months, they begin to rush;
- Sexual maturity occurs at 17-18 weeks;
- Each laying hen of the breed produces about 300 eggs per year;
- Fertility of eggs is about 95%;
- The hatchability of young stock is 87–92%.
Features of the breed
Poultry farmers of both huge complexes and very small farms are happy to give birth to Leghorn chickens. Breeding and keeping chickens is economically beneficial. The bird has positive properties that largely overcome some of the disadvantages.
- Leghorns are non-aggressive, get used to their owners well, have a good-natured disposition;
- They adapt well to conditions of detention and to climatic conditions. The Leghorn breed can be kept both in the northern regions and in the southern ones. Russian winters do not affect high bird productivity.
Features of the content
They carry equally well when kept in cages and when kept outdoors.
Poultry houses should be equipped with perches, nests, drinkers and feeders. For arranging perches, it is better to use rounded poles with a diameter of 40 mm, so it will be more convenient for the hens to wrap their legs around them. There should be enough space for all chickens, since they spend almost half of their lives on the roost. Structural strength is a prerequisite. The roost should not bend and support the weight of several chickens.
Any containers are suitable for arranging nests, if the laying hens are placed there. For comfort, the bottom is lined with hay. In a private household, it is better to provide birds with an open-air cage for walking. To do this, fence off the area adjacent to the poultry house, be sure to pull the 1.6 meter high net so that the birds do not have the opportunity to fly over. Otherwise, the birds can cause considerable harm to the farm. They will dig up the beds, peck at the vegetables. While walking, the birds eat worms, beetles, pebbles, which they need to grind food into the goiter.
The duty of poultry farmers is to comply with sanitary standards when keeping chickens. Clean up dirty litter litter in time. Chickens are small birds, but they are able to trample droppings to a stone state. In order not to put a lot of effort into cleaning the chicken coop, do it regularly.
The Leghorn breed has lost its incubation instinct. Therefore, it is recommended to lay eggs for incubation for chickens of other breeds or to use an incubator. Leghorns are unpretentious in nutrition. The diet should include grains, bran, seasonal vegetables and herbs. Chopped nettle is very useful. In addition, the diet should contain animal feed: meat and bone meal, fish meal, yogurt, cottage cheese. But, more often than not, these feeds are very expensive. The supply of calcium can be provided in another way - by adding chalk, limestone, crushed shell rock to the feed. You can also use special store-bought mixes for layers as vitamin supplements.
High egg production does not persist throughout the life of chickens. Its peak falls on 1 year of life, by the second year the chickens lay very few eggs. Experienced poultry farmers do not stop constantly renewing the livestock every 1.5 years. Thus, the required number of the most productive layers is maintained. Chickens over 1.5 years old are allowed to eat meat. For growing recommendations, see the video:
Striped leghorns
The striped leghorn was bred in the 1980s at the Institute of Breeding and Genetics of Farm Animals in the Soviet Union. In the process of directed selection, the specialists of the institute conducted a strict selection in the following areas: increased egg production, early puberty, egg weight and the appearance of chickens. Striped Leghorns were bred with the participation of the genetic material of an experimental group of black-and-white australorpes.
As a result, striped-motley leghorns were obtained with the following characteristics:
- Chickens of the egg direction. 220 eggs are carried per year. The shell is white or cream colored, dense;
- Gain weight quickly. At the age of 150 days, young hens weigh 1.7 kg. Adult chickens reach a mass of 2.1 kg, roosters - 2.5 kg;
- Sexual maturity in striped leghorns occurs at the age of 165 days. Fertility of eggs is up to 95%, hatchability of chickens is 80%, safety of young stock is 95%;
- Disease resistant;
- The carcass has an attractive presentation. Which is very important for colored chickens.
Breeding work to improve and consolidate the highly productive qualities of striped leghorns continues.
Mini Leghorns
Dwarf Leghorns B-33 - a smaller copy of Leghorns. Bred by Russian breeders. Today they are in demand all over the world. With miniature sizes: the weight of an adult hen is on average 1.3 kg, a rooster is up to 1.5 kg, mini-leghorns have retained their high productive indicators.
Dwarf Leghorn chickens have an egg orientation. Laying hens produce up to 260 eggs per year, weighing about 60 g. Eggs are white with a dense shell. Chickens begin to hatch early, at the age of 4-4.5 months. Leghorns V-33 is distinguished by a high percentage of preservation of young animals - 95%. The breed is economically viable for breeding.Chickens are not pretentious in the choice of feed and consume it 35% less than their larger counterparts. But for a full-fledged egg production, a high content of protein and calcium is required in the feed. With a high degree of egg fertilization up to 98%, unfortunately, dwarf Leghorns have completely lost their incubation instinct. Therefore, it is advisable to use an incubator on the farm. The breed of dwarf leghorns is distinguished by the absence of aggression towards humans and towards each other, a high level of adaptation and adaptability to Russian climatic conditions. Leghorn spotted (Dalmatian)
They differ from ordinary Leghorns in black and white. The first chickens with this color appeared in 1904. They were considered an anomaly. However, they became the progenitors of spotted Leghorns, which did not interbreed with any other breeds. Perhaps, the genes of the black Minorca, with the participation of which the Leghorn breed was bred, had an effect. Spotted Leghorn chickens are good layers.

Loman Brown and Loman White
Poultry breeders who want to have an even greater return on their farm can be advised to choose the Breed Loman Brown Classic. There are 2 of its subspecies: broken brown and broken white. The first was bred on the basis of the Plymouthrock breed, and the second on the basis of Leghorns in the German farm Loman Tirzucht in 1970. The breeding task was to bring out a highly productive cross, the qualities of which will not depend on climatic conditions. The efforts of the breeders have borne fruit. To date, Loman Brown crosses are in demand in the farms of Europe and our country. Loman brown and loman white differ only in color: dark brown and white. Look at the photo for both subspecies.
At the same time, the product characteristics are similar: 320 eggs per year. They begin to rush as early as 4 months. They do not require a lot of food, they tolerate the harsh Russian winters well. Most poultry farmers report a high economic benefit from keeping poultry.
Conclusion
The Leghorn breed has proven itself well in Russian farms. More than 20 large breeding farms are engaged in breeding the breed. On private farms, keeping and breeding the Leghorn breed is also economically beneficial. It is important to observe the change of generations of chickens in order to maintain a high percentage of egg production.
