Rhododendron Vladislav Jagiello is a new hybrid variety developed by Polish scientists. The variety was named after Jagailo, the Polish king and famous Lithuanian prince. The hybrid belongs to the group of hardy and abundantly flowering Royal rhododendrons. The plant forms a compact bush, which will be a great addition to landscape design.
Description of rhododendron Vladislav Jagiello
Rhododendron Vladislav Jagiello belongs to perennial, medium-sized shrubs. The wide crown, up to 1.5 m in diameter, is covered with dark emerald oblong foliage. In the first half of summer, large, bright scarlet flowers appear on the plant, collected in effective inflorescences. The flowering of Vladislav Jagiello's rhododendron is beautiful and long, lasts about 3 weeks under favorable weather conditions.
Growing conditions for rhododendron Vladislav Jagiello
Rhododendron Vladislav Jagiello is an unpretentious variety. For lush, beautiful flowering, it is planted in partial shade, since the bright rays of the sun can burn the foliage. The soil should be nutritious, well-drained with high acidity.
Rhododendron should not be planted near trees that have a shallow root system, as they will take all nutrients from the shrub. Rhododendron will look beautiful next to apple, pear and conifers.
Planting and caring for rhododendron Vladislav Jagiello
Rhododendron seedling Vladislav Jagiello is best purchased in nurseries, at the age of 2-4 years. When buying, you need to pay attention to the root system. It should be free of mechanical damage, wet blotches and knots. Also important are good bushiness of cuttings and healthy foliage.
Seedlings of rhododendron Vladislav Jagiello can be planted throughout the warm season. Landing technique:
- Dig a planting pit 40x60 cm in size.
- A nutritious soil is prepared: 8 buckets of peat and 3 buckets of loam are mixed and poured into a hole.
- Next, dig a hole, the size of the root system of the seedling.
- Before planting, the young plant is kept in water for about 2 hours.
- The seedling is carefully placed in the hole and covered with earth, tamping each layer.
- After planting, the plant is spilled abundantly, making sure that the root collar is located at soil level.
- The soil around the trunk circle is mulched with peat, sawdust or moss.
Rhododendron variety Vladislav Jagiello needs watering, feeding and pruning for lush and beautiful flowering. Since the root system of the plant is located superficially, it is not recommended to loosen the near-stem circle.
Irrigation should be abundant and regular, especially during budding and flowering. In hot, dry summers, the plant will not refuse spraying in the morning or evening hours. Correct and timely irrigation has a positive effect on the formation of flower buds for the next year.
Top dressing plays an important role in growth and development.The first top dressing is applied in early spring, the second - after flowering, the third - after pruning, to prepare for frost. Rotten manure diluted with water in a ratio of 1:15, superphosphates and potash fertilizers are used as fertilizers.
Rhododendron Vladislav Jagiello minimally needs shaping and pruning, since the bushes independently form a crown of the correct shape. But in order for the plant to look decorative, it is necessary to prune tall, frozen and old shoots in a timely manner. Pruning is carried out before bud break, the cut site is treated with garden varnish or brilliant green. Strongly frozen and old shoots are shortened to a length of 30-40 cm from the ground.
The rhododendron variety Vladislav Jagiello has one feature: in the first year, the flowering is lush and long, the next year it is modest and not lush. To get rid of this frequency, it is necessary to remove wilted inflorescences.
Rhododendron Vladislav Jagiello is a frost-resistant variety, therefore, an adult plant does not need to be covered. To preserve a bush in a personal plot, it is necessary to cover a young plant for 2-3 years. Rhododendron preparation:
- abundant watering;
- phosphorus-potassium feeding;
- fungicide treatment;
- at the onset of the first frost, the trunk circle is mulched and a frame covered with agrofibre is installed.
Reproduction
There are 2 main ways of reproduction of the Vladislav Jagiello rhododendron variety - these are cuttings and branches.
Cuttings - cuttings 10 cm long are cut in July, the lower leaves are removed, and the upper ones are shortened by ½ the length. The cuttings are soaked for 24 hours in a root formation stimulator, after which they are planted in a nutrient soil under a film. After a month, the cutting will grow the root system and after a year it can be transplanted to a permanent place.
With branches - in the spring they choose a strong, healthy branch, which is located closer to the ground. A shallow incision is made on the branch and placed in a pre-dug trench, so that the top is located above the soil surface. The branch is buried, spilled and mulched. In the fall, a root system will form on the shoot. In the spring, the rooted branch is carefully separated from the mother bush and transplanted to a new place.
Diseases and pests
Experienced growers claim that Vladislav Jagiello's rhododendron has a strong immunity to many diseases. But if agrotechnical rules are not followed, tracheomycosis, late blight, septoria spotting can join the shrub. Among the insect pests for rhododendron, the most dangerous are: mealy worm, gastropods, weevil.
In order not to face serious problems in the garden, it is necessary to eliminate unfavorable factors, which include:
- low soil acidity;
- increased soil moisture;
- open sunny place;
- unbalanced feeding.
Conclusion
With proper planting and subject to agrotechnical rules, the rhododendron Vladislav Jagiello will decorate the site for a long time. The plant looks good in single and group plantings, next to conifers and ornamental shrubs.
