With the onset of spring, I want to get out of the house faster. In the fresh air, you can not only relax, but also cook food. It's good when there is an open or closed summer kitchen in the yard, allowing you to do what you love. If you have not yet acquired such a building, you certainly need to correct the situation. We will try to help you figure out the preparation of the project, planning, design and other nuances of arranging a summer kitchen.
What are summer kitchens
Summer kitchens are conventionally divided into closed and open buildings. The first view is a complete building with walls, windows and doors. An open kitchen is nothing more than a shed or a gazebo, where an oven, sink, table and other household items are installed under the roof. If desired, a combined summer kitchen is built in the yard. That is, it is combined with other buildings.
Let's take a look at some interesting ideas:
- A summer kitchen with a gazebo is a common option for combining buildings at a summer cottage. The main advantage is the convenience of outdoor cooking. Usually, inexpensive finishing materials and the same furniture are chosen for such a gazebo due to their frequent pollution. A table with chairs is placed under the canopy so that you can eat without leaving the kitchen. A large gazebo can accommodate a summer kitchen with a barbecue, you just have to install a chimney. To be able to continue cooking with the onset of cold weather, the gazebo is made of a closed type.
- A terrace or veranda can be attached to the summer kitchen. There are many design options for such an architectural ensemble. The kitchen is erected as a full-fledged closed building, and together with it, a veranda is placed on the same foundation. It is adjacent to the wall with the front door. But the terrace is erected as a separate site. Moreover, it can be located not only at the front door, but also on the other side of the kitchen building, or, in general, around the building. The veranda and terrace are open as well as closed. You can make a transformer - open in summer and close in winter.
- A hozblok with a summer kitchen and a sauna is a very convenient summer cottage option. Two useful rooms are located under one roof and stand on a common foundation. Hozblok is often built in small areas due to space savings. In addition, less building materials are used for such a structure.
- Nowadays, summer kitchens with barbecues are gaining popularity, and an even better solution is the construction of a Russian stove. The design is very complex, requires a lot of capital investment, but effective. In the Russian stove, you can organize a brazier, a smokehouse, a barbecue, install a cauldron, even fashion a fireplace. If there is not enough money for such a building, you can install a portable grill, and fix a smoke hood above it.
- The garage attached to the summer kitchen is another option for the utility block. However, this combination of buildings is considered fire hazardous. For safety reasons, it is advisable to equip a small intermediate room between the kitchen and the garage. Let it be a pantry for spare parts or garden tools.
- A very practical combination of buildings is an outdoor shower with a kitchen. The small utility block is convenient to use in the country. After cooking, a person gets the opportunity to quickly rinse, and immediately return to the kitchen at the table.
If you didn’t like any of the kitchen options, then you can just stop at a separate building.

What you need to consider when drawing up a project
The summer kitchen is a major building and requires a supply of communications. Before starting construction, it is imperative to draw up a project, taking into account all the important nuances:
- Drawing up a project begins with a drawing. In addition to the layout, all the dimensions of the building are indicated on the diagram. The area of the kitchen depends on the number of people who constantly visit it. Let's say about 8 m is enough for a family of three2... If the kitchen under one roof is located with another room, then the area is increased, taking into account the dimensions of the other building.
- The project indicates the type of kitchen: open or closed. In the second version, the drawing indicates the location of the windows and doors. The construction of walls and roofs is developed taking into account their insulation. If it is planned to use a summer building in winter, heating is provided when drawing up a project.
- On the diagram, you need to clearly indicate the supply of communications. A summer kitchen without electricity and running water is impractical. With the onset of darkness, the possibility of cooking disappears, and in order to wash a plate or collect water, you will need to run into the house.
- When drawing up a project, fire safety is taken into account. Grill, barbecue, cooking stove are sources of open fire. The materials from which the walls of the building and their cladding are made must be non-combustible.
- It is important to correctly determine the type of foundation. For a light wooden canopy, you can get by with a columnar base. If a capital brick building is being built with a Russian stove inside, you will have to fill in a strip foundation or use reinforced concrete slabs.
When all the important nuances are taken into account, you can think about the future interior of the summer kitchen, the arrangement of the adjacent territory and other little things.
The nuances of arranging a summer kitchen
How best to equip the summer kitchen for himself is decided only by the owner, or, more precisely, the hostess. It is she who will have to stand for hours at the stove while cooking. What can you advise in this regard? Let's start with an open veranda. It's nice to eat outdoors, but the sun or wind can get in the way. If the openings of the open veranda are covered with curtains that have served in the house, various pendants, ropes, then you get a good decor and protection.
The next question concerns the owner. If a gas stove is installed for cooking, then it is usually connected to a propane-butane cylinder. It's important to be concerned about safety here. It is advisable to take the balloon outside the summer building. For him, you can make a beautiful box, decorate with decorative elements or weld a frame around it from rods, along which the vines will trail.
The interior design of the summer kitchen should be comfortable for the hostess. It is important to provide lots of comfortable and sturdy shelves. They are useful for dishes and preservation. There is nothing to do without a sink in the kitchen. Don't buy expensive ceramics. You can get by with a budget stainless steel sink. Water is supplied to the sink from the water supply system or a storage tank is installed. The sewage system is led out with plastic pipes outside the kitchen. There will be a lot of dirty water, so you will have to equip a cesspool.
If the summer kitchen is part of a single complex with a dining room, shower, terrace and other buildings, the entire area is decorated with green spaces. You can even enclose the resting place with a hedge.
If the summer kitchen is supposed to be located under a canopy, then its floor and the adjacent territory must be paved using the technology of paved areas. The flooring can also be boards, but only smooth, not wood cuts. A wooden floor is installed in the kitchen, and a stone floor is laid out on the street.
As for the canopy, it is provided for larger dimensions than for ordinary resting places. It must completely cover the kitchen equipment from precipitation. It is better to make a roof for a canopy with a simple single-slope or gable without covering the gables. Moreover, the height of the building itself should not be more than that of a residential building. A summer kitchen sinking below the garden level looks perfect on the plot.
Russian stove
The simplest oven for a summer kitchen in the village can be found outside the premises. Typically, such a brick building consists of a small chimney and a cast iron hob. Even the firebox is not always closed with a door. The disadvantage of this design is that it stands in the open air. You cannot cook food in the rain. Plus, such ovens are fire hazardous. Smoke with sparks scatters throughout the yard, which is very dangerous in dry hot weather.
Difficult to build, but very convenient is the Russian stove for the summer kitchen, installed right inside the room. The design is so versatile that it allows you to prepare a variety of delicious meals.
The general structure of the furnace looks like this:
- The stove is fenced off with at least two brick walls. They are shown in the diagram under number 1. Better if it is three walls. They will completely cover the cooking area from the wind. Although here you need to take into account one more nuance. Blank walls are placed on the side from which the wind most often blows. This is provided at the stage of project development in order to correctly determine the location of the stove in the room.
- The brick building has an impressive weight, so a concrete foundation is required. Often, instead of a strip foundation, a site is equipped under a stove with kitchen walls. In the diagram, it is indicated at number 2. Old reinforced concrete slabs are ideal for work. First, according to the size of the building, they dig a depression on the bayonet of a shovel, pour a sand and gravel pillow, and put slabs on top. If there is no such material at home, then the site is simply poured out of concrete, but they must be reinforced. The concrete area is made at least 100 mm above the ground level.
- A red brick oven is placed on top of the finished platform. It is indicated by number 3. It is important to consider the approach from the side of the hob. In our example, it is designated by number 4. The second side of the oven can be flush with the wall.
- In the photo, the summer kitchen is shown with three blank walls, that is, of the semi-open type. For such a design, the right wall can be laid out narrow so that it only covers the stove from the wind. The roof at the fourth corner will be supported by a brick or metal support, indicated by the number 5.
In the presented diagram, a small space is provided between the back wall and the stove. It is designated # 8. The free space is suitable for storing metal tools, for example, a poker, a scoop, etc.
Design
There are a lot of design options for a summer kitchen. Better to opt for a simple rustic or Scandinavian style. The decor from natural materials looks good. If there is a lot of space in the kitchen, and there are several areas for rest and work inside, they can be beautifully divided. It is easiest to use different materials for the paving of each area. Wood goes well with tiles or stone.
Summer kitchen can be given a modern style. A bar counter with high chairs will look beautiful. It is made integral with the food preparation area or separated by lifting it onto the podium. Here you can still play with lighting. The area near the stove is made well lit, and at the bar counter soft lighting is organized with spotlights.
Choosing furniture
It is advisable to choose inexpensive furniture for the summer kitchen, and so that it lends itself well to cleaning. For an open construction option, a stationary option is suitable. That is, furniture is laid out of bricks, wooden or plastic seats are attached. The table top can be tiled.Such furniture is not afraid of dampness, grease, dirt, and also will not be scattered on the floor by a strong wind.
Alternatively, you can raft old furniture from the house into the summer kitchen after buying a new one. In general, apart from a table and chairs, nothing else is required here. If there is free space, you can put a sofa and a couple of small nightstands away from the stove.
