Variety history
The English rose has spread not so long ago, the variety is a little over fifty years old. But the popularity of cultivation can give odds to many other relatives.
The author of the variety is a farmer from England David Austin. He wanted to get new varieties that could give their beauty and aroma not once a year, but the whole summer. He also dreamed of the many colors of his roses and the large size of flowers, lashes, developed the rules for planting and care.
To obtain the first grade, he used old English varieties. Then he crossed the resulting rose with new breeding varieties. On the achieved results, David Austin did not want to stop, continued breeding work. The result is new varieties of English roses of various colors.
The very first variety that brought fame to the farmer was Constance Spry, its popularity continues today.
Together with his friend Graham Thomas, Austin continued to work. English ostins soon appeared with yellow, orange, burgundy and other shades. There are spray and climbing roses in the collection.
Today, David Austin's empire is the most famous in the world. In his nursery, there are more than 4 million Austin seedlings of various varieties. He opened branches in many countries. English roses confidently "walk" the planet, "win" the hearts of new fans.
There is nothing to be surprised at, because David Austin managed to create varieties of roses, in which, along with the novelty, the charm and splendor of the old English species remained. Modern Ostinki are able to survive in adverse conditions, bloom continuously throughout the warm season. One has only to look at the photo of David's double roses once, as soon as you fall in love with them.

Advantages and disadvantages
David Austin's roses are attracted to:
- unusual strong aroma;
- the ability of the plant to survive in severe frosts;
- the presence of flowering buds along the entire length of the stem;
- unusual terry petals;
- bright colors;
- the ability to create all kinds of flower arrangements.
Of the negative aspects, growers note:
- poor "health" of English roses during precipitation;
- a large number of buds leads to wilting of the lashes;
- David Austin roses are not resistant to black leaf spot.
Flower shape
David Austin's roses are in the shape of a bowl, pompom or rosette. Today, there are practically no English varieties with a cone-shaped bud, externally similar to hybrid tea roses.
The scent of the Austin
David Austin's English roses are valued for their beauty and endurance, but even more for their scent. The unique aromas can be felt at a great distance from the flowering rose bush. It is impossible to confuse.
Ostinki are famous for five flavors:
- fruity;
- the smell inherent in the old roses of England;
- as a classic - the scent of myrrh;
- tea and floral notes of lemon;
- the scent of musk, a wilting rose.
David Austin works carefully on the aromas of his roses. The most interesting thing is that the saturation of the range of smells depends on the temperature and humidity of the air, and the time of day.
Flowering features
If the English rose is planted correctly and it is provided with proper care, then it is the very first to bloom, and pleases with multi-colored buds until the end of June. After that, new shoots grow in her, after a while, secondary flowering begins. Again, the fragrant buds do not disappear from the rosebush until early September.
Growing features
Landing
Planting roses is an important step in creating a rose garden. It should be borne in mind that the ostins have no particular preference for the place of growth.
Ostinok seedlings are placed in water before planting. The pit is being prepared in advance. It should be deep and wide enough so that the roots in it can be located freely, about 50x50.
Sand, black soil and fertilizers are poured at the bottom of the hole. The seedling is removed from the water and placed in the hole. The roots are straightened. Most often, varietal roses are grafted onto rose hips. So that he does not drown out the ostinka with his wild shoots, when planting, we dig in the roots deeper so that the dog rose cannot break through to the top.
Add soil to the hole, lightly press the soil, water. When planting English roses, you need to take into account a certain pattern. According to the rules, they are planted in a triangle. In the first year, the flowers are only watered, no feeding is needed.

Pruning
The first pruning of David Austin roses is carried out after planting. The formation of a rose bush will depend on its correctness. The second time they cut the lashes before the shelter for the winter.
The next year, in the spring, the shoots are cut to almost half the length. This is necessary so that the main shoot grows faster, and lateral shoots appear.
English roses are cared for all year round. If any shoot or twig breaks in the summer, they must be cut out immediately. The work on trimming the ostins is carried out with a disinfected sharp pruner. Places of cuts are pollinated with charcoal or activated charcoal.
All subsequent cuts are performed according to the rules. Bush roses shorten by 1/4 the length of the shoot, climbing no more than 15 cm. Remember, good pruning stimulates the growth of buds. Insufficient pruning negatively affects the formation of a rose bush: there will be few branches, they can bend and bend to the ground. Cropping rules are shown in the photo.
Care
Once planted, grooming is the primary concern in growing a healthy plant. From the first days, you need to monitor the soil moisture, loosen it as needed. Loosening is necessary to supply oxygen to the root system and better absorb water.
Top dressing is given to seedlings that are more than one year old. Complex fertilizers are needed to feed the plants. Ostinki are fed every 3-4 weeks. The final top dressing is the end of August.
If buds appear on a freshly planted English rose, they must be removed.
Ostinks react negatively to excess moisture. On them, as a rule, about 120 flowers can bloom at the same time. If the rains are charged, we can assume that some of the buds will not be able to open and die.
What else is the care of English roses? The bushes are examined twice a week for infection. At the slightest sign, the ostins are treated with special preparations.
Wintering
Ostinks grow in any climate; in winter they are able to withstand low temperatures. But with plants that were planted 2-3 years ago, you should not risk it. In order for David Austin's roses to start growing well in the spring and not get sick, they need to be covered for the winter.
Ground and sawdust can be used as cover. The height of the mound above the root system of bush roses should be at least 15 centimeters. The braided varieties are removed from the support, the whips are carefully laid and also sprinkled with a protective layer.
Shelter is done in the second half of October. When the air temperature drops below zero, the edges are covered with cellophane or special non-woven material. To prevent the wind from pulling off the light covering, it is pressed down with boards or a piece of slate.

Ostinki in Russian gardens
The Russians started planting Austin just 12 years ago. David Austin himself believes that the cultivation of his rose bushes can be done in any country.
There is no branch of the author of the unique collection in Russia. According to Canadians, Russian flower growers determine whether a particular variety will take root in a harsh climate. But flower lovers do not want to settle for a limited number of English roses suitable for our climate. After all, the correct planting, care, shelter of seedlings for the winter, work wonders. Ostinks take root in Russia, and there is no need to argue with that!
