Transplanting boxwood in autumn and spring

Boxwood (buxus) is an evergreen plant with a dense crown and glossy foliage. It is undemanding to care for, tolerates haircuts well and keeps its shape steadily. The plant is used in ornamental gardening for landscaping, creating topiary, curbs and hedges. You can transplant boxwood in spring and autumn. If the planting rules are followed, the seedlings take root easily and quickly.

Features of transplanting an adult boxwood

Transplantation to another place of a boxwood, already an adult plant, is possible at any age. In order for it to take root well, you should adhere to the recommendations:

  1. The best time to transplant is spring. During the summer and autumn period, boxwood will take root well, which will allow it to endure wintering.
  2. An adult specimen is transplanted with a soil clod, for this it is dug in from all sides to the depth of a shovel bayonet and then removed from the ground.
  3. The transplanting rules are the same as when planting seedlings in open ground.
Important! Boxwood is considered an adult after three years.

When can you transplant boxwood

Boxwood blooms in spring. The optimal transplant time for him is autumn. Due to its unpretentiousness, spring and summer transplants are also successful.

Advice! For plants that bloom in spring, transplant is carried out in the fall. For cultures that bloom in late summer and autumn, the event is held in the spring.

Transplanting boxwood to a new place in the fall

For transplanting boxwood in the fall, the time is chosen so that it has time to take root before the onset of frost. The shrub takes about a month to recover, so the optimal period is the second half of September - early October.

If the seedling is purchased at a later date, then it is added dropwise for the winter, covered with a waterproof lightweight covering material. Plastic wrap should not be used for this purpose.

A feature of the autumn transplant is that when the earth settles, the buxus must be mulched. Used as mulch:

  • agrotextile;
  • low-lying peat;
  • chips.
Important! It is impossible to use oak bark and coniferous sawdust for mulching - they decompose poorly and reduce the acidity of the soil.

Transplanting boxwood to a new location in the spring

The advantage of transplanting boxwood in spring is that it adapts in 15 to 20 days. The air temperature is less than 30 oС and the absence of significant fluctuations in it contributes to the successful rooting of the plant.

In temperate climates, the crop can be planted in early spring: late March - early April. A transplant in the summer is not recommended, since boxwood in a new place at high temperatures does not take root well.

To protect the roots of the transplanted buxus from the summer heat, it must be covered with sand or perlite. The mulch is laid in a layer of 5 - 7 cm at a distance of about 2 cm from the trunk. This will allow free air circulation.

Important! A large amount of mulch during transplanting will lead to the fact that the roots will not go deep into the soil, but will be in the surface layer. This will negatively affect the condition of the boxwood in dry weather.

How to transplant boxwood to another location

To safely transplant a boxwood bush, follow a specific procedure. In general, they boil down to several stages.

Plant preparation

To prepare a seedling for planting in the ground, you can use one of the methods:

  • if the boxwood is in a container, then a day before the transplant, the earth is spilled abundantly with water - this will make it easy to remove the seedling;
  • if the specimen has bare roots, then the soil is carefully removed from them and placed in water for 24 hours.

Important! In the case when, during transplantation, it is found that the roots of the plant are strongly intertwined, have gone inside the root ball, they should be unraveled with a thin oblong instrument. If this is not done, then the root system will not be able to free itself and restore the natural external direction of growth.

Site preparation

Boxwood is planted in a shaded area, next to large plants or buildings. Groundwater should not come close to the surface of the earth.

Attention! If boxwood is placed in an open, well-warmed area, foliage may awaken during a thaw in winter, which is likely to suffer during the next frost.

If the shrub is planned to be cut frequently, giving it the necessary shape, then the soil should be fertile: this will ensure good growth. Buxus thrives on acidic soils (pH> 6). You can increase the acidity with the help of low-lying peat, humus, compost, soil mixture (two parts of sand and humus and one part of sod land).

Boxwood is transplanted into a pit for individual planting or in a shallow trench when forming a curb or hedge. Depending on its variety and features of landscape design, the recommended distance between seedlings is 30 - 50 cm. When creating a border, 10 specimens are planted per 1 meter.

The parameters of the holes should be three times the size of the root system. A drainage layer is poured at the bottom. You can use expanded clay, perlite (mixed 1: 1 with soil from the pit) or a mixture of crushed stone with sand in a 1: 1 ratio.

Fertilization

For a successful transplant, the soil is fertilized. Growth is stimulated with compost, nitrogen or compound fertilizers for evergreen crops. In dry form, they are evenly mixed in a hole with soil.

Important! Before planting, you should not apply large quantities of fertilizer directly into the hole and spill abundantly with water. The resulting high concentrations can "burn" the roots, which will lead to the death of the culture.

Landing algorithm

  1. Place the boxwood in the hole.
  2. A seedling or an adult specimen is set in the hole strictly vertically, straightening the roots.
  3. Deepen it to the same level as in the previous place of growth.
  4. Then the substrate is gradually covered up to the height of growth. To exclude the formation of voids, the soil is introduced in portions, tamping each layer.
  5. After filling the hole with soil, the buxus is watered. For this, it is recommended to use well, rain or settled tap water. The required amount is calculated based on the size: for a plant with a height of 15 - 20 cm, about 3 liters of water will be required.
  6. If the soil has settled, add soil. There is no need to condense this layer. Around the trunk, at a distance of 20 - 30 cm, make a small earthen rampart to prevent water spreading during irrigation.
  7. The near-trunk circle (a piece of land near the trunk, corresponding to the diameter of the crown) is sprinkled with a layer of perlite 2 cm thick.

Transplanted plant care

After transplantation, boxwood does not require complex care. But for each period of the year, there are certain rules:

  1. After transplanting in the fall, it is necessary to ensure that the soil does not dry out. If the bush is located in a sunny place, then watering is carried out by sprinkling. For a good wintering, the culture is fed with phosphorus-potassium fertilizers. The first cutting of the shrub is carried out not earlier than spring.
  2. After a spring transplant, fertilizer should not be applied for a month. During the growing season, once a week, you can feed the shrub with chicken droppings or a growth stimulant. In summer, in the absence of rain, water should be watered no more than 1 time per week. If the planting is carried out in the form of a curb, then the plants must be well shed and cut by a third.

Conclusion

You can transplant boxwood at any time of the year, except for winter. For young specimens, an autumn transplant is recommended, for unpretentious adult plants - a spring one. The culture takes root well and can be used to implement bold and traditional solutions in the landscape design of the infield.
