Explorer series hybrid tea roses: planting and care

Rosa Explorer is not just one flower, but a whole series of varieties developed by different breeders. A wide variety of crops allows you to choose the best option for your garden or site.

Breeding history

The entire series is the work of Canadian researchers. Roses were originally created in Ottawa, later research was carried out in Quebec. Currently, the work related to this series has been discontinued. Each of the varieties is named after its creator.

Most of the varieties from Explorer are compound hybrids. Many varieties are based on the Cordes rose. The main characteristic of the series is good frost resistance and abundant flowering.

Important! The characteristics of the variety indicated by the manufacturer do not always coincide with reality. Not all roses are able to withstand the Russian climate with dignity and need shelter, although the description contains information about their frost resistance.

Description of the explorer rose variety and characteristics

The varieties of the series are characterized by abundant flowering. The plant is frost-resistant, able to withstand cold temperatures up to -40 ° C. If frosts damaged the shoots of the bush, then the rose quickly recovers, although it blooms less abundantly this year.

The remarkable qualities of the Explorer series roses are their ease of care. The culture grows beautifully in gardens and parks, without fear of drought or rainy periods.

The flower is undemanding to the composition of the soil, but pleases with abundant flowering only with regular feeding

Varieties of varieties of roses in the Explorer series

The whole series is divided into 3 groups:

  • park bush - Champlain, Lambert Closse, Lewis Joliet, Royal Edward, Simon Fraser;
  • Rogue - Henry Hudson, Martin Frobisher.
  • Climbers - Captain Samuel Holland, Henry Kilsey, William Bafin, John Cabot.

When choosing a variety for a site, you should study the varietal characteristics of a flower in order to make beautiful compositions when designing a landscape.

Champlain

The variety was bred in 1973. In height, the Explorer rose grows from 70 cm to 1 m. The shoots are strong, branched. The buds are velvety to the touch, red in color, with a weak aroma. They reach 6-7 cm in diameter and consist of 30 petals.

The culture has a strong immune system, it does not suffer from powdery mildew and successfully resists black spot. Reproduction for the Champlain variety is cuttings.

The bush can withstand frosts down to -40 ° C, but needs regular spring pruning of dead shoots

Lambert Closse

The variety was obtained in 1983. Parental qualities were taken from Arthur Bell and John Davis roses. In height it reaches 85 cm.In width it grows up to 80 cm.

The color of the variety is interesting: when closed, the buds are dark pink, but as they open, they change the tone to pink. The loose flowers are light pink. This feature allows you to use the Explorer roses to compose a bouquet. Judging by the photo, the flowers look spectacular, reaching a diameter of 8 cm, consisting of 53 petals. The buds can be either single, or in brushes of 3 pieces.

The flowering period of Lambert Closset is from mid-summer to September

Louis Jolliet (Lewis Joliet)

The species was bred in 1984. It is a creeping variety, the branches of which reach 1.2 m in length.

The Explorer's buds are pink, on the bush they are presented in the form of brushes of 3-10 pieces. The flower is 7 cm in diameter, consists of 38 petals, exudes a pleasant, spicy aroma.

Lewis Joliet propagates by cuttings, is not afraid of powdery mildew and black spot.

With sufficient lighting and warm weather, the buds can be admired from mid-summer to September

Royal Edward

The variety was bred in 1985. The height of the bush is up to 45 cm, in width it grows up to 55 cm. The buds of the hybrid tea rose Explorer are dark pink, but fade in the sun, therefore they become pale pink. The diameter of the flowers reaches 5.5 cm, each of them consists of 18 petals. On a bush, buds can be located either singly or in a brush from 2 to 7 pieces.

The explorer rose blooms from June to September. In the spring, the shrub needs pruning.

A miniature rose is a ground cover, therefore it is recommended to plant it when creating alpine slides and decorating small gardens

Simon Fraser

The rose was bred in 1985. The height of the shrub is 0.6 m. The buds are 5 cm in diameter, pink in color, united in inflorescences of 1-4 pieces. Most of the flowers of a rose of the Explorer series are semi-double with 22 petals, but simple buds with 5 petals also appear.

Bloom lasts from June to September

Captain Samuel Holland

The cultivar was bred in 1981. Creeping shrub, climbing. Shoots can be up to 1.8 m in length.

The flowers are red in color, up to 7 cm in diameter. Each flower consists of 23 petals. The buds are combined into inflorescences, each of which contains 1-10 pieces.

Variety with a strong immune system, not susceptible to black spot and powdery mildew.

A characteristic feature of the Explorer rose: if the weather is sunny, then the bush can bloom again

Henry Kelsey

The variety was bred in 1972. Climbing bush, the shoots of the Explorer rose can reach 2-2.5 m in length.

The red queen of roses has beautiful bright buds with a spicy scent. The diameter of each varies from 6 to 8 cm. There are 25 petals in the flower. On one brush, the plant forms 9-18 flowers.

Important! Frost resistance up to - 35-40 ° С.

Henry Kilsey's rose blooms throughout the summer season, rarely affected by disease due to a strong immune system

John Cabot

John Cabot was bred in 1969. The rose is climbing, with strong and flexible branches, whose length varies from 2.5 to 3 m. The buds are bright crimson, 7 cm in diameter, consist of 40 petals.

The buds form from June to July, but under favorable weather conditions they bloom again in August and September.

William Baffin

The variety was bred in 1975. It is the result of free pollination of a seedling whose roots are Rosa kordesii Hort., Red Dawn and Suzanne. The bush does not need pruning, its shoots reach a length of 2.5-3 m.

Its flowers are red in color, with a pleasant light aroma. Each bud has 20 petals. The diameter of the bud is 6-7 cm. Each inflorescence has up to 30 flowers.

Rosa Explorer tolerates frosts well down to -40-45 ° С

Henry Hudson

The rose was obtained in 1966 as a result of free pollination of the Schneezwerg cultivar.

Height 0.5-0.7 m, in width it grows up to 1 m. The flowers of the Explorer rose are white, with a pink tint, consisting of 20 petals, resembling apple buds. A pleasant aroma is also characteristic of them.

It blooms several times per season, if weather conditions permit.

Rosa Explorer is intended for cultivation in zone 2; in a harsh climate, damage to the shoots and roots of the plant is possible

Martin Frobisher

This is another result of free pollination of the Schneezwerg rose. The variety was bred in 1962.

The height of the shrubs is from 1.5 to 2 m. In diameter, it can reach 1.5 m. The flowers of the Explorer rose are pale pink, with a pronounced aroma. Each bud is 5-6 cm in diameter, collected from 40 petals.

You can appreciate the beauty of the photos taken against the background of the Explorer rose throughout the season, from June to September the flowers wither, and instead of them, new ones bloom, if weather conditions permit.

The variety is not afraid of mealy rose, but it can be affected by black spot

Advantages and disadvantages of the variety

The advantages of the variety include:

  • winter hardiness;
  • attractive appearance;
  • variety of colors of buds;
  • strong immune system;
  • resistance to periods of rains and droughts;
  • abundant and long-lasting flowering.

The disadvantages of the variety include inaccuracies in the description: despite the promises of the producers, some of the Explorer varieties of roses can freeze slightly in cold regions. If the shrub has been damaged by frost, then part of its strength will be spent on recovery, so flowering during the season will not be abundant.

Reproduction methods

The main method used to propagate Explorer roses is cuttings.

To do this, in July, you need to cut branches of 25-30 cm each. You need to use young, but fully formed shoots.

Important! The lower part of the cutting should be beveled at an angle: this will facilitate the process of planting.

All leaf plates, except for the upper ones, need to be cut and the blanks should be placed in a solution of a root formation stimulator

In containers with soil, plant the cuttings with the cut down, cover with a plastic bottle, wait for the beginning of root formation.

The stalk is ready for transplanting into open ground, when new leaves and buds appear, and the seedling begins to grow

Important! Explorer roses are distinguished by good survival rate, so you can plant cuttings directly into the ground. Seedlings need watering protection from the sun for the first 2 weeks after planting.

It is possible to divide the bush in two, but Explorer roses do not tolerate transplanting to a new place well.

Growing and care

Explorer roses grow beautifully in any corner of the garden, but the most abundant flowering can be achieved if you choose the right place for them. The flower gives preference to areas that are lighted or with light partial shade.

The soil should be fertile, with a slightly acidic or neutral reaction, and water permeable.

The landing algorithm is simple:

  1. Prepare a hole for the size of the bush, leave a distance of 35 cm between the seedlings if the variety is undersized, and 1 m for weaving tall representatives of Explorer roses.
  2. Place gravel or sand at the bottom of the hole, fill 2/3 of the hole with a mixture of humus, peat and wood ash.
  3. Transfer the seedling treated with a growth stimulator to the pit, cover it with earth, deepening the grafting site by 5-10 cm.
  4. Mulch the rose with sawdust.
Important! The optimal time for planting is autumn. The plant will have time to take root before frost, and in spring it will grow.

The bush may not take root if you do not deepen the graft site, it is from it that a strong root system should begin to form

Rose Care Explorer:

  1. Watering. Moisten the plant at the root throughout the season so that the soil is slightly moist, the last procedure is carried out at the beginning of September.
  2. Regular loosening and mulching of the trunk circle.
  3. Pruning is carried out annually in the spring; broken, damaged branches are subject to removal.
  4. Top dressing is carried out annually, in the spring 20-30 g of carbamide is introduced into the soil, and in the middle of summer 30 g of superphosphate and 20 g of potassium magnesium.

And although the Explorer roses do not need shelter, many gardeners recommend protecting the bushes from frost.

Young seedlings especially need protection, it is enough to wrap the bush with spruce branches or cloth

Pests and diseases

Canadian roses are characterized by a strong immune system, they are not afraid of powdery mildew or rot. If mold or white bloom appears on the plant, then these are sure signs that the culture is severely weakened.

As a preventive measure, it is enough to cut off dead and damaged branches, remove fallen leaves. In spring and autumn, the Explorer rose bushes should be treated with Quadris or Acrobat fungicides.

Application in landscape design

Most often, the Pink Explorer rose can be found in parks. But even in private plots, the flower can be used to decorate the garden. It is self-sufficient, so they prefer to plant evergreen shrubs in the company, which will emphasize the beauty of the buds in the background.

There should be at least 1 m between the bushes, while the climbing tall Explorer roses are placed behind the low-growing species

Flowers planted along the walls of houses and fences look very organic and beautiful.

With the help of climbing roses, you can create beautiful arches, wrap them around columns or other structures.

It is important not to neglect pruning, to give the plant the necessary shape, using fasteners and support devices

Gardeners prefer to plant undersized varieties in flower beds or along garden paths.

Among ground cover low-growing roses Explorer, you can choose varieties so that flowering bushes create the look of a border tape

Conclusion

Rose Explorer is a favorite flower series among gardeners. The varieties are valued for their frost resistance, strong immunity and abundant, long flowering. For your site, you can choose bush, weaving and undersized species to create flower arrangements in the garden.

Reviews with a photo about the Rose Explorer

Ilyina Maria Stepanovna, 34 years old, Pskov
Initially, I was disappointed with the variety planted: the bush grew only 70 cm, there were few flowers, although large, they quickly faded. But the next year, more buds were formed. The most abundant and longest flowering occurs 2-3 years after planting, then the flowers correspond to the picture, delight with aroma. She did not cover her seedlings, nothing froze.
Shiryaeva Ksenia Igorevna, 31 years old, Nizhnevartovsk
In our region, not a single rose took root, despite the shelter. Several copies from the Explorer series were ordered only for their frost resistance. Due to the cold and short summer in the region, the bushes do not have time to reach their maximum height, but they bloom beautifully and very abundantly. Since in the region frosts down to -40 ° C can last for weeks, I cover my bushes with spruce branches and cloth. Not a single bush for 6 years has not only died out, not even slightly frozen.
